In pulp and paper mills, a large portion of waste is made up of organic matter from plants. This waste is complex and costly to recycle. In Finland, more than 90% of this waste is burned, which releases CO2 into the air. Soilfood collaborates with pulp and paper mills in Finland to transform this waste into natural fertilizers and treatments for soil used by farmers.

By using Puro.earth’s Soil Amendment methodology, Soilfood creates products that help slow down the breakdown of organic carbon in the soil. This leads to an increase in farm yields of over 1% and enhances the ability of agriculture to withstand climate changes. These products are stable carbon compounds that lock carbon in the soil for at least 20 years. Additionally, Soilfood’s products significantly reduce N2O emissions in soils compared to typical chemical fertilizers used in Finland, by a factor of 50 times.

Independent assessors regularly review Soilfood's projects to analyze their environmental impact and lifecycle. The positive side effects of using Soilfood's products are distributed equally among participating pulp and paper mills and farmers. This approach benefits the environment, the mills, and the agricultural community.
