Biochar is a solid material rich in organic carbon. Using advanced pyrolysis technology, large amounts of sustainably sourced waste materials are converted into carbon storage on a big scale. In this process, carbon from biomass is captured and stored as biochar, achieved by excluding oxygen. This pyrolysis process is environmentally friendly: it's a closed system without gas leaks, and it only requires a small amount of extra energy at the start. Novocarbo, the organization behind this, only collaborates with certified biomass producers who use leftover materials, not new resources.
All the equipment used in this process is powered by local renewable energy sources. Any extra heat and energy generated are returned to the energy grid.
Novocarbo operates biochar production facilities across Germany. The biochar they produce serves two main purposes:
Soil Enhancement: The biochar is used as a soil amendment in agricultural crop production. It helps build up organic matter in farmland, which benefits the soil. This improves soil health, reduces the emission of nitrous oxide (a potent greenhouse gas), and lessens the need for irrigation, thus conserving water.
Plant Health: The application of biochar improves plant resilience to fungal diseases. This contributes to healthier plants and more robust agricultural yields.
In summary, Novocarbo employs innovative technology to turn waste into biochar, a carbon-rich material. This biochar is then used to improve soil quality in agriculture, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water, and enhance plant health.
